New Brexit food checks will test Britain's supply chains

In industry, it's being called Brexit 2.0. At least, that is the more polite version of the name for the imposition of a series of new post-Brexit requirements in Britain for food importers.

It is the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle of the changes necessary after the UK's exit from the EU's customs union and single market.

The most high-profile changes for food and plant product imports from the European Union start to be phased in on Wednesday.

This will mean significantly extra red tape. In particular, an expensive veterinary certificate will be legally required with consignments of fresh food and plant imports from the EU. These are a requirement from 00:01 GMT on Wednesday, but will not be subject to actual checks at the border for another three months.

The government acknowledges that the extra red tape and checks will increase food prices, pushing up the overall level of prices by 0.2 percentage points over three years.

That means a notable impact on food inflation, but not a new food price shock of the kind seen after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That increase was, nonetheless, sufficient for the cabinet to further delay the imposition of the checks last year, at a time when food inflation was rising at double-digit rates.

As Tom Southall, a director of the Cold Chain Federation, puts it: "There's never been a good time to do it, which is why it's been delayed five times."

The delays have led to two issues. There has been a lack of reciprocity. UK food and farm exports to the EU have required extra red tape, checks and delays for three years, but their competitors on the continent have enjoyed unfettered access to the UK. The farming industry has expressed concern for UK biosecurity, i.e. defending against the spread of plant and animal diseases, that could prove very costly.

But on Wednesday, four years on from Brexit day, the changes will start.

People beware of shingles.
I recently found a rash on my right kidney region, which quickly turned into a blistered wound. Strangely enough I had no serious amount of pain. As the healing began, so did the discomfort.
The discomfort is more of an annoyance, as it is n the form of itchiness akin to rubbing fibreglass insulation batts over my skin. Nothing severe, just randomly irritating.
The randomness of when the itchiness is going to strike is the major frustration.

I have been lucky in getting what I deem a mild case.

I don't know much about this, I have only known 1 person with this and the only thing that helped was acupuncture, are you getting medical treatment Krak?

Sandra, I saw a skin specialist about 5 or 6 days after it started, and he stated I was through the worst part of it and had to let it run its course. If there was any problems, come back and see him.
But being the archetypal meathead male, I am in the school of tough it out. So far, I am not losing any sleep over it, literally. And life goes on.
I've heard some horror stories about shingles, a few first hand, but most anecdotal, and I know how lucky I am.

From today, more than 10,000 pharmacies in England are assessing and treating patients for conditions including sinusitis, a sore throat, earache and shingles.

Petrol prices have hit their lowest level in two years, despite the widening conflict in the Red Sea that has spiked fears they will rise.

The average price of petrol at the pump in the UK sat at 140p per litre on Tuesday – a decrease of 26 per cent compared to July two years ago, when it hit 199p. Diesel is now down to 148p per litre.

Even though the attacks by Houthi rebels on vessels in the Red Sea have intensified in recent days, there are only limited signs of disruption in the flow of crude oil and refined products like diesel and petrol to Europe.
