Seems to me it spread as a thing after porn adopted it in the late '90s or around 2000. I don't shave mine, found I get rashes that way, but try to keep it trimmed short with a Wahl clipper, using a short guard. I like it trimmed basically for personal hygiene.

73 YO guy here, I have been keeping shaved down under for many years now. My pubes are pretty fine and I never have any ingrown or rash problems. A few swipes with a new blade in the shower every few days keeps things smooth and clean.
