A new COVID variant known as NB.1.8.1 has made landfall in the United States.
The variant, which was first detected in China this past January, currently accounts for 10% of the SARS-CoV-2 sequences tested from around the world, recent surveillance data found.
That's a significant jump from 2.5% four weeks ago.

The agency is in regular contact with international partners about the activity of NB.1.8.1. To date, only 20 NB.1.8.1 sequences have been identified in the U.S. — that's below the threshold needed for a variant to appear on the agency's COVID dashboard.
As soon as its prevalence increases, NB.1.8.1 will pop up on the tracker.

It's nerve-wracking to hear that a new variant is making the rounds, but infectious disease specialists say there are no glaring differences between the symptoms of NB.1.8.1 and those caused by other versions of SARS-CoV-2.

"Given that immunity to COVID is waning in the population due to a decline in uptake of the spring booster jab and the reduction of COVID infections in recent months, more people will be susceptible to infection with XFG.

"This could lead to a new wave of infection, but it's difficult to predict the extent of this wave."

'Aggressive mandate' of Covid vaccines was 'probably a bad idea' as new study reveals WHO mandated blanket vaccination saved 'fewer lives than expected'

The 'aggressive mandate' of Covid vaccines has been blasted as a 'bad idea' by experts after a new study revealed it saved less lives than predicted.

I stay up to date on Covid vax (and flu, and others...) and I plan to continue to do that, though my government is withholding information and trying to make it harder. I live in the Southeastern US, a very low compliance area, and I remember when they brought in LOTS of refrigerated trucks (lorries) just to hold the excess bodies.

Covid infection rates are again on the rise here.

Many people in my area who laughed at Covid cannot laugh anymore at all, and the toll included people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s as well as children, and hardly a family here was untouched by death. When I finally did get Covid, extremely late in the game, it was bad enough even with the partial immunity conveyed by the vaccine.

At least in the US, prior to Trump politicizing it, the purpose of the mass vaccination campaigns was to blunt the upward spike in hospital admittance rates to relieve pressure on the healthcare system more than it was to save lives, although lives were certainly saved. It remains one of the great unfortunate happenings of the recent past that Covid was immediately and intensely politicized.

In the US these days, the result of that politicization still can be seen. People will flock to get flu vaccines or other vaccines, but those same patients will refuse a Covid jab. In the US, over 1,104,000 people have died of Covid so far. This chart shows comparative death rates during the most intense period of US Covid activity...

Between initial reports in mid-June and now, the new variant Sandra mentioned, NB.1.8.1, has now become the predominant strain in the USA. Covid is on the rise in 18 states. This variant caused a major spike in China. Meanwhile, RFK Jr. dithers and screws around with the vaccine review panel.

Vaccines are a massive encroachment on people's bodily autonomy and every one should be free to decide whether they want them or not

Martin Sichert of the AfD in Germany

The movement is by no means confined to the US.
Across the world, anti-vaxxers have seized on growing public mistrust of the medical establishment — particularly since the start of the Covid pandemic — to reach an ever larger audience that cuts across both left and right.

That scepticism often then feeds hostility to other institutions.

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm tempted to say that it's OK that they don't want to get any vaccinations, but I feel deeply sorry for all the children dying as a result. But the adult? Let them die regretting their beliefs.

And any anti-vaxxers causing an infection on a toddler that is not old enough to be vaccinated should be charged and put in jail for child endangerment or manslaughter is death if a result of the infection.

The vaccine chaos comes as COVID-19 is either increasing or starting to hit its late summer peak. According to data released Friday, there are now 14 states with "very high" levels of coronavirus detected in their wastewater — California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Indiana, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Connecticut, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii and Alaska, as well as the District of Columbia.

Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, the regional physician chief of infectious diseases for Kaiser Permanente Southern California, said data continue to show an increase in COVID-19 cases.

"Over this past week, we've seen an increase in the number of outpatient COVID cases, and even a smattering of inpatient cases," Hudson said. "It appears that we may be nearing the top of the wave, but it may be another two weeks or so until we truly know if we're there."

The rate at which COVID-19 lab tests are confirming infection also continues to rise statewide and in the Los Angeles area.

For the week ending Aug. 30, California's COVID test positivity rate was 12.83%, up from 7.05% for the week ending Aug. 2. In L.A. County, the positive test rate was 14.83%, up from 9.33%.

New federal restrictions are making it difficult for many Americans to access COVID vaccines during a late summer surge.
Adults under 65 must now consult healthcare professionals or attest to underlying conditions before getting updated shots.
The confusion has left doctors, pharmacists and patients scrambling as vaccine access becomes increasingly unclear.

A new Covid variant is presenting symptoms that could easily be dismissed as it rapidly spreads. Health experts in Ireland have reported 425 new infections in the first week of September, with the Stratus variant (also known as XFG), believed to be responsible for the majority of these cases.

The variant is surging at an alarming rate
, now accounting for 76.1% of reported infections compared to just 49.3% six weeks ago.

The World Health Organisation has classified Stratus as a "variant under monitoring". While it is not believed to cause a more severe illness, it can spread faster than earlier strains.

It presents a subtle, early symptom that people might dismiss rather than recognise as an illness.
