Age of consent laws vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, though most jurisdictions set the age of consent in the range 14 to 18

(with the exceptions of Argentina and Niger which set the age of consent for 13, and 14 Muslim states that set the consent by marriage only).

Personally I don't believe in age of consent per se. I believe in a sliding scale based on the age difference of the two consenting parties. For instance 14-15, 16-20, 18-25, 20-30, 22-40, 25-50. This would help eliminate some of the young men being flagged as a sexual offender because his GF happens to be under age but he is only a year or two older.

I get that laws are there to protect people but a single age can be a very blunt instrument. I wasn't the first boy in my class to lose my virginity, nor was my girlfriend the first in hers either. We felt ready. We took precautions, we visited a Brook clinic and A got the pill.  Being the UK, no charge nor any need to involve parents in her choice.  It was brilliant and we fucked a lot that summer. But we were both 13 and the law, had it known, would have declared us illegal.  It was right for us.   But we also knew people who left school at 18 as virgins, didn't feel ready, either physically or mentally.

I'm a Dad now and I wondered how I'd feel once my daughters (I've two plus one son too) started dating.  So easy to become a hypocrite. But in fact, I was cool about it. I trusted their common sense and their own judgement.  That seems better as an age of consent than a single legal age, whether that's 16, 18, 13 or whatever!

21.  The human brain and nervous system are not full developed until age 23.  That includes maturity.  That's why I think firearm ownership in the US should be 21.
