It might be the first day of August - but today Brits are being warned to brace for Storm Floris which will batter the UK next week.

A yellow alert has been issued in northern parts of the country from 6am Monday to 6am Tuesday, with forecasters warning of 'unseasonably strong' winds and a 'danger to life'.

Batten down the hatches: Storm Floris surges towards Britain with travel chaos expected amid 90mph gusts and Met Office amber warning - as experts order people to 'keep their doors CLOSED'

A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued for northern areas of the UK from 6am today until 6am tomorrow.
The warnings have been upgraded to amber for much of Scotland, lasting from 10am to 10pm.
It is the sixth named storm of the 2024-25 season and is expected to cause severe travel disruption.

Several areas in Australia were blanketed with its thickest layer of snow in decades as wild weather swept through the country over the weekend.
Around 20 inches of snow had been forecast to fall on Saturday in some towns, with more than 10cm of rain expected in others the New South Wales State Emergency Service said. 
Thousands of homes remained without power yesterday, with mobile phone outages widely reported across the area.

More than 1,400 people were forced to flee their homes yesterday in north-west Spain as wildfires spread fast, driven by blazing temperatures and fierce winds.
In and around Carucedo, roughly 400 residents were relocated, while another 700 were evacuated from towns close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Las Medulas, once a Roman gold-mining location famed for its intense red terrain.
Castile and León's regional leader, Alfonso Manueco, said arson is suspected in some instances.
He wrote on X: 'We will be relentless with the perpetrators of these attacks against the lives and safety of people and our historical and natural heritage,' he wrote on X.

He also said the authorities will be 'merciless' with the arsonists.
