LOS ANGELES (AP) — California on Friday ordered rolling power outages for the first time since 2001 as a statewide heat wave strained its electrical system.

The California Independent System Operator (California ISO), which manages the power grid, declared an emergency shortly after 6:30 p.m. and directed utilities around the state to shed their power loads.

Pacific Gas & Electric, the state's largest utility, tweeted that it would turn off power to about 200,000 to 250,000 customers in rotating outages for about an hour at a time. Other utilities were told to do the same.

The emergency declaration ended just before 10 p.m. and California ISO said power had been restored statewide.

"Extreme heat is really the driver behind this,"
said Anne Gonzales, spokeswoman for the power grid operator.

Temperatures reached 33.6 degrees Celsius in Volkel at 3:10 p.m., making it the warmest August 14 in the Netherlands since weather measurements began, the weather service Weeronline reported. This broke the record set in 2022, when temperatures reached 33.4 degrees Celsius in Gilze-Rijen on this date.

Tourists run for cover as freak 'Satan's Storm' lashes Spanish beach - while country battles wildfires in 45C heatwave and Portuguese villagers resort to fighting blazes themselves
Europe has been rocked by yet more wild weather extremes with a 'Satan's Storm' lashing a Spanish beach and Portuguese villagers tackling infernos themselves as blazing fires ravage parts of the country.
In one of several terrifying weather events to sweep the continent in recent days, panicked tourists were left sprinting for cover from a rare and intense heat burst in near-hurricane force winds in southern Spain's Costa Granadina.
In dramatic footage, holidaymakers were seen running from the Satan's Storm - an atmospheric phenomenon characterised by a sudden, localised increase in air temperature near the Earth's surface - as sunshades and pool loungers were sent flying across the beach.

Guess I won't be taking my afternoon walk today.

This is an important message from the City of Los Angeles Notify LA System

Los Angeles is expecting a multi-day period of extreme heat from Thursday at 11am through at least Saturday. Temperatures could reach up to 107 degrees in the San Fernando Valley and up to 95 in downtown Los Angeles and the LA basin.

This heat wave will also impact and worsen air quality, and smog will reach unsafe levels in many parts of the City. Since these extremely high temperatures and bad air quality will continue for many days in a row, it's very important to be proactive and make sure you and your community have a plan to stay safe during extreme heat.

Key Atlantic current is on the brink of COLLAPSING - plunging Europe and the US into a never-ending winter
Iconic US cities and landmarks set to DISAPPEAR by 2050

A critical ocean current that keeps parts of the world from freezing over is at risk of completely shutting down within decades.

A research team from Europe found that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could collapse after 2100, especially if greenhouse gas emissions remain high.

The AMOC is like a giant ocean conveyor belt that moves warm water from the tropics to the northern Atlantic, with the Gulf Stream playing a key role, acting as the main current carrying that warm water along the US East Coast to the north.
