A 'glass tax' to help the environment will likely kill off beer bottles - and limit the choice of booze available on supermarket shelves, brewers have warned.

Set to begin on April 1, the new extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme will see businesses charged for the amount of packaging they use - based on its weight.

With glass bottles weighing in heavier than other vessels like cans, the policy could see brewers - unable to pay up - abandon bottles completely, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) cautioned.

Ministers hope to raise £1billion from the new scheme - which will help fund local authority waste collection.

The Government said it was about 'minimising the environmental impacts of packaging and maximising the contribution that packaging reform can make to net zero'.

A grim forecast about what this would do to the British beer industry.

'This is not an environmental scheme... it is a tax.'

The British Glass Association felt similarly, saying brewers would be charged around 49 times more for using glass than for other less recyclable materials - purely because of its weight.

The 'glass tax' would have businesses paying up to 7p more per 500ml bottle in packaging costs, the BBPA said.

Brewers make on average only 3p of profit on a half-litre bottle, it added - so if they do not increase their prices, the 'glass tax' will have them in deep financial trouble.

Left without much choice, businesses may start using cheaper materials like aluminium cans, the association said - causing bottles to become far less common.

It would decimate an enormous market - roughly five billion glass bottles are sold in the UK every year.

It would likely cause job losses too, British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation explained, in an industry 120,000 people work in.

Many brewers also think glass is the best material for packaging, in terms of its strength and how it protects the quality of their product.

Industry leaders wrote to Environment Secretary Steve Reed last year warning him that British ales could be wiped out by the EPR.

Quote from: Sandra on Nov, 29, 2024, A bloke has left people bewildered after revealing the reason why he could not impregnate his wife, despite trying his hardest for almost a year.

The man, who kept his identity secret wrote into Slate's popular sex advice column, How To Do It, under the guise of "Not Rising to the Occasion". He revealed that after a trip to the doctor to discuss his and his wife's fertility issues, the doc told him that infertility wasn't the issue. Instead he had to be told to "stop wearing condoms when having sex".

The 30-year-old added that both he and his wife come from a country, where wearing a condom was drilled in to them as a way of avoiding STIs.

I've heard wierd ones too. One young Christian couple couldn't get pregnant. Went to the doctor who asked 'how often do you have sex?"  They said, 'Oh, we don't do that. That's evil". He had them watch sex education videos.
Another Christian couple got pregnant right away and asked a friend why. After all, they had stretched the condom over the carrot just as they had seen in the instruction video. Great balls of fire,  funny#

Mother avoids deportation to the Caribbean by claiming it is TOO hot and her husband doesn't like the food.

A mother who arrived in the UK on a six-month visa but never left has reportedly delayed her deportation after claiming her Caribbean home would be too hot for her new Latvian husband, who would struggle to cope with its tropical cuisine.
Grenadian national Lynthia Calliste jetted into Britain with her son in March 2018 but stayed illegally in the UK after her visitor visa expired.
While in Britain, 35-year-old Calliste married Latvian forklift driver Konstantins Vinakovs, who has a permanent settled status.
Calliste then applied for a marital visa - prompting the Home Office to launch an investigation to try and deport her.
But she is now battling against being booted out of the UK by arguing separating her from her husband would breach Article 8 of the European Convention on Human rights - the right to a family life.

Pakistani father who was jailed for child sex offences
avoids deportation because it would be 'unduly harsh' on his two toddlers if he was forced to leave the UK

The father-of-two was convicted of trying to get three 'barely pubescent' girls to engage in sex.
A judge later said to deport him would be 'unduly harsh' on his children - sparking a legal row.

I identify as a llama, and you should respect me:

'furries' who only eat from bowls, use litter trays and walk on all fours - as health minister insists they deserve 'dignity'

Sir Keir Starmer's new health minister Ashley Dalton has raised eyebrows by backing the idea of people identifying as llamas, saying that they deserve 'dignity and respect'.

To most, the idea of someone identifying as a South American pack animal may seem beyond the realms of absurd, but to a small but growing community of people who feel more aligned to furry creatures than they do humans, the news will come as cause for celebration.

A growing number of individuals around the world have rejected their human identity, claiming instead that they feel more comfortable being thought of as cats, dogs, horses.

There is even one woman who indeed appears to have self-identified as llama.
